In 1972, John Wojtowicz tried to rob a Brooklyn bank to finance his lover’s sex change operation. His bungled burglary was the nearly-literal inspiration for Sidney Lumet’s classic Dog Day Afternoon, and in 2014, The Dog is the definitive portrait of the real man behind the true crime transgender love story of our time. Graphically, we used stark, centered hand-lettering to reflect the forceful but unstable presence of the central character, and kept a light touch on photo treatment throughout. As The Dog says in an immortal quote from the film – “No one would ever did what I did.”
